Skoolie Editorial: Covid-19

As soon as the world quit making sense, I needed to be close to the one thing that did: my skoolie. This bus is everything to me. It’s been a symbol of safety, hope and the future. When all three of those concepts seemed threatened by the pandemic, being two hours away from my catch-all plan wasn’t going to work. Two days before Illinois issued the stay at home order, I made a quick trip to Michigan to grab my bus. I spent the following days watching “Doomsday Preppers” on Netflix and making sure I worked in ample dry food storage and safety mechanisms to fight off god-knows-what. You could say I was coping with the state of the world just fine.

Here’s how it went down:

With the bus in Chicago, the top priority was to make sure all the blinkers, brake lights and headlights worked. I had tried to change the light bulbs, nothing. A friend of mine who knew how to read a manual and a much better understanding of electricity came to the rescue. After a few hours of determining what it wasn’t, it turned out to be an easy fix — almost too easy. Though the entirety of my dash does not work, all blinkers and brake lights do!

Here’s what was wrong with my lights: 

If I would have been told at the beginning of all this, that the pandemic would be pushing me to live my truth, with my bus, I wouldn’t have believed you. With much consideration, careful planning and precaution, I made the decision to follow through with my move out of Chicago, but not with the same intention to move to Minneapolis.

Over the next week, I will be working with my friends Taylor and Cheyne of @radicalregenerationbustour to build composting toilets for both our skoolies, install plumbing, install some frames and a bed before I depart on the next leg of my journey, which is still undetermined.
