Interview: Anna Fluksova of 50 Women
Chicago based playwright, actress and improv guru – Anna Fluksova, prepares for her debut show, “50 Women.” The sketch show, rooted in humor and intertwined with women empowerment is set to debut on Sunday, March 24 with a second show on Sunday, March 31 at The iO Theater in the Lincoln Park Neighborhood.
The show is a “theatrical experience celebrating the many women in all of us.”
Yes, all of us.
Femme, non-bianary, trans and CIS – the show addresses experiences women go through, yet might feel alone in. Subjects touched on will vary from heavy to light, from feminism to sensualism, from self-love to mutual understandings.
“I, as a women, have felt isolated at times, lacking the comfort of women in things that we all deal with,” said Fluksova. “All due to lack of communication! My desire with this show is to allow a bunch of seemingly different women to enter a room and relate to the women seen on stage.”
Fluksova’s desire is for women to leave the show with mixed emotions, more appreciation for the women in their lives and “a slight hatred for men, but no more than before they came to the show.”
Though the show is rooted in female confidence and acceptance, in a world where gender is being broken down, Fluksova hopes the men in attendance can feel related to as well.
When going through her Drive, Fluksova realized she had a collection of 30-40 original, women characters she had created. She spent six months conceptualizing the show and six months of intertwining her characters with other women’s experiences and other non-stage aspects of the show.
“I had this idea and was not able to verbalize it, now it doesn’t have to be explained. It can be seen,” said Fluksova.
The website features a place to submit stories about wonderful women. Fluksova hopes others stories and experiences will help her orient more of the show around women she has never met and experience’s she may not have experienced – to offer a more well-rounded expression of women.
The website also has a special tab for non-profit organizations benefiting women. Some of these organizations include The Period Project, Sarah’s Circle and Girls in the Game. The website also shares a list of local, women owned businesses to support as well. Many of these businesses have also donated items for a raffle.
The intent is that the support felt within the show, carries over into everyday life as well. “So many people have been interested in getting involved that the show has grown into something bigger than I imagined!” Said Fluksova.
“50 Women” will take place of March 24 and 31 at iO Theater. Tickets are $10.
