Flow Festival Line-Up
The line-up for Flow Festival has been released! Here it is with an inside look from festival founder, Chris Berry.
In 2014, the direction of Kīlauea Volcano’s lava flow threatened to cut Puna, Hawai’i off from the rest of the island. Puna is located on the southeast coast of the Big Island. It’s known for its thick jungle, the island’s largest farmers market, the residents sustainable practices and community centered lifestyle. The residents of Puna had two choices when it came to the flow of the lava: to run away or face the potential change.
Hawiian story tells us that the volcanos of the Hawaiian Islands we’re born as a result of the battles of two sisters; Namakaokaha‘i, goddess of the ocean, and Pele, goddess of fire. Pele searched the Hawiian Islands for a place to call home. But, as she dug her fire pits, Namakaokaha‘i put them out. Pele made her way to the Big Island where she settled so high above the ocean she was untouchable by Namakaokaha‘i. To this day, Pele resides in Kīlauea Volcano, the most active volcano amongst the chain of islands and in the entire world.
Musician and resident of Puna, Chris Berry, understood the threat of the lava flow as a sign from Pele to put Puna’s talk into action. Thus, Flow Festival was born. The Annual Flow Festival will be held February 2nd, 3rd and 4th. This will be the second year that Flow Festival is held at Green Lake in Puna.
“The intention was to excite the community into pro-activity and cooperation, rather than running away” said festival founder, Chris Berry.
The idea was to focus on working together to create basic resources to “implement sustainable and holistic systems” Berry added.
The flow of Kīlauea Volcano is currently not a threat to Puna and Flow Festival is looking forward to this being their 4th gathering. This year, they are striving to further their emphasis on sustainability and island culture.
This year, the festival plans on stepping up their zero waste policies as well as introducing a Hawaiian Village with a stage, vendors and workshops focused on Hawaiian culture. The goal is to bridge the gap between island natives and the other inhabitants of the island.
“We hope to create waves in healing the divide and misunderstanding that ensues through a lack of awareness of cultural diversity” said Berry.
Attendees can also look forward to a “Pono Portal” at the entrance of the event, encouraging everyone to enter the grounds with respect for the land, the elements, the culture, and each other. “Pono” in Hawaiian translates to “good.”
As for music, the 2018 line-up is laced with local talent and some pretty exciting names. The line-up includes Eoto, Cas Haley, Yaima, Tubby Love, Chris Berry, Paul Izak, Amber Lily, Sara Tone, Mikey, Pauker, Bana Kuma, Kahu, Heartifact, Cosmic Serenity, Shaman’s Dream, Kalapana ‘Awa Band, New Reb, OK2Change and many more. The remainder of the line-up will be announced December 1st.
“Flow Festival acts as a meeting ground and a place for sharing amongst thousands of visionaries. It’s a place in which we can example for the rest of the world just how magical life can be” said Berry.
