Flow Festival Feature: Art of Laurie Bauers
A persons art or craft offers viewers a glimpse into their thoughts and experiences. It can tells us how the artist views themselves or the world around them. It can offer a new perspective or make the viewer feel understood. Sometimes it can conjure up old memories or bring us to a world we’ve never entered.
Laurie Bauers is usually found painting in her studio or on her front porch. But, for her third consecutive year, Bauers will be bringing her easel and brushes to Flow Festival to paint in the company of dancing feet and to the sound of music.
Portrayed through smooth edges and soft tones, her paintings offer the sense of clarity and peace that is experienced on the island. An event, such as Flow Fest, can serve as a source of inspiration for artists and attendees alike.
The 4th Annual Flow Festival is taking place February 2 – 4 on the Southern coast of the Big Island of Hawai’i. The zero waste and off grid event’s goal is to encourage a growing relationship between both humans and nature as well as between the natives and non-natives of the island.
“I enjoy the vibes – the music, the happiness of the crowd, and knowing that I’m inspiring others as a I create as well,” said Bauers.
Bauers plan is to start off Flow Festival with a large blank canvas. She has yet to plan what she will be painting over the course of the event. But, by the end of the third day she’ll have a mostly completed picture that she’ll put the final touches on later at her studio.
“Sometimes I paint what’s coming through in the moment. Other times I just let it flow and see what happens,” Bauers said. “It’s always a bit interesting to see what emerges on the fly.”
With the support of her mother, Laurie Bauers has memories of painting since she was a mere eight-years-old. It wasn’t until she was 24 that she began to see painting as an outlet to express and understand things she was feeling.
At a point in Bauer’s life, she began having strange wakings in the night and intense dreams. To understand what was happening to her, she began to seek the help of elders. The answer she came upon was the theosophy of the Akashic Records and Quantum Healing Hypnotherapy. The Akashic Records is the philosophy that there is a non-physical realm of collective understanding that we can tap in to. Bauers described her understanding of the Akashic Records as entering “a place of larger perspective.” Since March 2016, she has been certified by the leading expert of the Akashic Records, Dr. Linda Howe.
Her art serves as a visual representation of this “larger perspective.” Alongside her understanding of herself, the spiritual realm and its relationship with nature. Her paintings commonly feature women and water. The people in her paintings are a representation of herself and the people she has come in contact with and she understands water as an emotion.
“My intention is to help people remember their divinity and that true, unconditional love is the only truth,” said Bauers. “Everything else is just learning and healing to remind us of this truth.”
