Flow Artist of the Week : Eunji Munji
Here's an interview with our weekly flow artist, Eunji Munj.
At Shangri-La Music Festival in 2016, I yelled “YAS QUEEN” to find my group of friends at the fire-spinning circle. It’s our “meeting-call,” my friends and I had been yelling it all weekend to find each other. Someone we didn’t know, however, was listening too. This girl ran up to me in a onesie screaming “YAS QUEEN” and we basically became best friends. We quickly followed each other on social media and watched the fire-spinners burn.
Since then, I’ve come to admire her as a person, and as a hooper. She’s a cheese head and from the only state you can get New Glarus Brewing’s infamous Spotted Cow, Wisconsin. Here’s an interview with hooper, Eunji Munji.
Q: How long have you been hooping?
Answer: I’ve been hooping since June of 2015, so a little over 2 years now.
Q: What made you want to start?
A. I saw people hula hooping for the first time at Grateful Garcia Gathering in 2014 and I was immediately intrigued. I didn’t pick one up until a year later because I was afraid I would be horrible… but once I finally picked it up a hoop and practiced a little bit, it felt so natural to have it in my hands.
Q: What’s your preferred size of hoop?
A. I love love looooove 11/16 polypro tubing. My preferred diameter is 28″ or 25″ for doubles.
Q: What’s your favorite: LED, fire or day hoop? Why?
A: I own all three of them but I think I prefer my day hoops the most, because I’m really rough with my hoops. I’m pretty new to fire spinning so it’s still a little intimidating, and LED hoops can be are fragile. I actually went too hard during Snowta last year and snapped the rivets/connection on my old LED, resulting in the light strip getting torn out. Oops.
Q: Who do you get your hoops from?
A: The hoops I use most often are my quads and main single hoop from MissHoopsALot. My LED is a Featherweight Future Hoop from Mood Hoops and my fire hoop is from KittyBearHoops . I have a bunch of other hoops, too, but I don’t give them anywhere near as much attention.
Q: What’s your favorite trick?
A: Isolations. It’s the first trick I learned and I love all the variations you can do with iso’s.
Q: What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever hooped?
A: Oh man. I just went on a wild road trip this summer and hooped at a bunch of different places,
but I think Olympic National Forest was the coolest. Those rainforest’s are so lush.
Q: Obviously you’d bring your hoop, but what are the other two things you’d have with you on a desert island?
A: A hammock and a dog. Hammocks and puppies are life.
Q: What type of music do you like to flow to?
A: Anything that makes me wanna get up and move! It depends on my mood at the moment, but I like almost all genres of music so I’ll go from jam bands to EDM to metal to whatever pops up next.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d like to offer new flowmies?
A: Record your practice or practice in front of a mirror so you can watch yourself improve, and don’t be afraid of making mistakes or looking silly! Flop around and accidentally break some furniture! Trip over your hoop and fall on your face during a jump-through! Smack yourself in the face with your poi! Get tangled up in your long string wand! Bust your lip trying to get that staff move down! You can’t get better if you don’t practice, so practice whenever you can, even it’s only for a few minutes. Remember that the only person you should be in competition with is with the person you were. Most importantly, be kind and compassionate to others, and don’t forget to do the same for yourself.
