And on the 10th Day of Snowta, PH gave to you … Pretty Lights!

When the house lights dim and the arena goes black, there’s a moment of anxious clarity. We expect to hear our favorite songs, but it’s the light show that’s always a mystery. There could be a thousand different lasers in a hundred different colors — lights make an EDM show an experience. Pretty Lights is known for his stellar light production and is bringing it to Snowta Saturday.

Derek Vincent Smith, Pretty Lights, began producing music since 2004, playing with acts such as STS9, the Disco Biscuits and Widespread Panic. In 2010, he appeared on in the festival scene at Coachella and Ultra Music Festival in Miami.

His name appeared on 2017 festival lineups including Camp Bisco, Bunbury Music Festival, Life is Beautiful, Imagine Festival, Moonrise and more. Not to mention countless solo tour dates and the second season of his Episodic tour.

Pretty Lights rang in 2017  by putting on a two-day event at the Mardi Gras World Ballroom in New Orleans. This year, he will perform the first day of Snowta and then bring the production to Philadelphia to ring in 2018.

If you can’t wait until Saturday to catch Pretty Lights, Smith will be live streaming his show Thursday and Friday at The Fillmore in Detroit (10:15 p.m. ET) and again on New Years Eve at The Fillmore in Philadelphia (10:05 ET). With Puerto Rico still in need of relief assistance from Hurricane Irma and Maria,  there will be a “donate” option available to make a contribution to United for Puerto Rico and all proceeds will go directly to the organization. Plus 1 is helping Smith donate an additional $1 from all ticket sales in Detroit and Philadelphia.

Pretty Lights’ latest single, “Rainbows and Waterfalls”, is an airy track with Pretty Lights’ signature voice effects leading into a futuristic drop with a dabble of space wubs. It’s funky, yet wubby, and the lyrics are inspired by “Strawberry Letter 23,” a 1970s song by Shuggie Otis and made famous by The Brothers Johnson.

Here’s a note from Derek about the song and video.

“LETTER 22 is a story of the positivity that underscores all movement towards progress and enlightenment, no matter how many obstacles stand in the way. It is the story of a pure force of will, hidden somewhere out there, that is dedicated to revealing evolutionary truths to this universe in a systematic way.

It is the story of a visitor from another place, charged with delivering an enigmatic message; a wandering guardian, protecting a civilization that rejects the sun; and a being watching over it all, orchestrating its rhythms.

LETTER 22 is also the story of all of us, who have each, at one time or another, felt ourselves to be in possession of knowledge or insight that appears an innate, universal truth to us, but is callously dismissed by others. In such moments, it is easy to feel as though you truly are from a different planet, governed by a different sense of logic and order than this one, which used to feel so familiar.

However, in such moments we also find ourselves at a crossroads – a point in spacetime where we must choose to either succumb to these tribulations, or overcome them, and let those triumphs fuel the continued search for others who are also willing to open their eyes to another point of view.”
