WEiRD WAiFU on Weebs and Wooks [Artist Feature]

There’s a niche for everyone in EDM. If you’re a little dubstep with a sprinkle of metal, there is Sullivan King. If you see the world in black and white and like experimental bass, there is G Jones. If you’re a weeb, but also a wook—there’s WEiRD WAiFU. The up and coming producer from Seattle is breaking into the bass scene with her own unique spin. The hybrid experimental bass and trap producer finds inspiration in the musical sounds of G-Rex and blurrd vzn. The element of surprise from WEiRD WAiFU—anime.

Shianne Trammell explains “waifu” to mean “wifey or bae” in anime culture. Her recent release with Colton Johnson, “Kagune”, is also inspired by 2D animation.  “Kagune” is a reference to the superpower that emerges from the ghoul’s backs in Tokyo Ghoul, an anime series. Fans of the track can anticipate another collaboration from the neighboring artists soon.

The cross over of music and anime doesn’t end there. “Some artists start with a drop or intro, but I start with the words or a sample from a favorite anime scene,” said WEiRD WAiFU. She feels that the added element of inspiration makes the music multidimensional. “It’s important to look at something besides the computer screen—to have different arts going into it,” said WEiRD WAiFU. “It’s a collaboration between weebs and wooks.”

WEiRD WAiFU’s friends describe her as “blindly optimistic.” When Seattle was announcing a second shut down, she kept her sights on growth and production. The DJ finished building her first PC and played GRLFEST 2, a virtual festival by GRL GANG. “I saw one ‘bad’ thing that happened, but also two really positive things that happened,” said WEiRD WAiFU. She also incorporated a visual element to the virtual performance—making the stream her favorite to date.

“Of course I miss playing live shows, but working on production will pay off more and more,” said WEiRD WAiFU. She announced earlier this month that she is now being represented by Prysm Talent Agency. Other artists under the agency are Kleopatra and COM3T, who were also apart of GRLFEST 2.

WEiRD WAiFU began making music two years ago. “Music saved me in a lot of tough situations. It made me happy and now I can give it back to people to make them happy.” Currently, the musician is independent and self-taught, but she aspires to take a MastersClass to further her knowledge.

The end goal is to be signed by Wakaan, Liquid Stranger’s music label.

“I love Wakaan. It’s my dream to get signed by them,” said WEiRD WAiFU.

Aside from working on her signature sound, WEiRD WAiFU likes connecting with her fans. Her favorite platform is TikTok.TikTok is just happy and inside jokes,” said WEiRD WAiFU. She finds the social media app to foster the most authentic connections.

A few times a week she will go live so people can see the personality behind the music. “I try to be who I am in real life on the internet, ” said WEiRD WAiFU. “I am not afraid to be me—It’s my niche.”

WEiRD WAiFU is also on all other music streaming and social platforms.
