Autumn Remington the Jingle Footed Festie Fairy [FAF]

Flow Artist Friday is a piece that recognizes anyone with a love of flow. No matter your prop, flow recognizes flow. Autumn Remington is a standout flow artist. I caught her flow at the Galactic Get-Down fire circle held in August at the Hairy Mosquito Trading Company in Milaca, MN. The Hairy Mosquito itself is something everyone should experience for themselves. The atmosphere of the venue marinated with the fire spinning event well.

Autumn was one of the first fire spinners I saw and instantly she caught my eye. Her seamless transitions kept my attention. The way she moved from trick to trick without a hiccup is something all flow artists aspire to do. Her delicate dance between fire and flesh is one to be admired. I was able to watch her dance with, what some would call, the most inaccessible of the four elements. She was kind enough to sit down with me and answer some questions.

PH: Where are you from?
AR: I grew up in the Twin Cities west metro area.

PH: What/who made you want to start flowing? Why?
AR: I started hula hooping in 2011. My best friend, Daniel Sunshine (If you were ever around Harmony Park during the Fabric Town days you may have known him!) showed me. The very first night I could keep a hoop up around my waist, he made me spin fire!

PH: What is your preferred flow toy?
AR: 28 inch, inner diameter PolyPro hoops. The small size makes them so fast and light, although it does make on-body tricks a little more difficult.

I also spin fire fans and do a lot of fleshing and fire eating tricks. I am slowly but surely learning poi, but have only lit mine up a few times.

PH: What is your favorite: LED, fire, or day flow? Why?
AR: Yikes, this is a tough question! I love them all for different reasons.  I would have to say spinning fire. It is so visually impressive and the WOOSH WOOSH sounds you hear while spinning is such a rush. However, I do believe that hoops are the prop that translates the worst into fire spinning simply due to the nature of where the wicks have to be placed and how it limits somethings that you can physically do with the hoop. I love LED for the technology progression it has made over the last 9 years of hooping.

PH: Who do you get your hoops/toys from? Do you make your own?
AR: I have made hoops in the past, but they did not turn out well! I got my fire fans from Forged Creations and my Hoops from Kitty Bear hoops. I have owned just about every type of LED smart hoop available, even the prodigy hoop and I was the only person to ever receive one after the Kickstarter failed.

PH: What is your favorite trick to perform and to watch?
AR: Personally, I love to do pizza tosses with my fire hoop. It’s one of my signature moves and I am pretty good at wailing it to the moon and keeping it straight up and down my body. I love to watch any Poi most of all, I find it so hypnotic and it is such a big inspiration for me.

PH: What is the most beautiful place you’ve ever hooped?
AR: Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. The String Cheese Incident shows are the only times you can bring hoops into the shows and it is so worth it! Have you ever danced on the top of the world to your favorite song? It’s so incredible.

PH: What type of ambiance do you like to flow to? This can include location, music, weather, vibe, etc.
AR: Nothing will ever feel like live music in the summer!! It’s my ultimate meditation.

PH: What is one piece of advice you’d like to offer new flowmies?
AR: KEEP GOING! PLAY A LOT! HAVE FUN!  Don’t compare yourself to other flow artists you see and get discouraged. Everyone’s glow is different and yours is beautiful also!  Keep your toys near you. I always have a hoop in my kitchen, and I learn so much by picking it up while waiting for food to cook, etc.

PH: Highlight a moment of your flow career?
AR: Anytime and every time I get to hoop onstage with my friend’s bands or perform at my friend’s festivals.

PH: Is there anyone you take inspiration from? Why?
AR: Every single one of you!
