Vokab Kompany celebrates “Small Viktories” with new album release![Album Overview]

  Out of San Diego California, comes the feel good album of the summer! If you aren’t familiar with Vokab Kompany just yet, don’t worry you soon will be. This seven piece band consists of two emcees, Rob Hurt and Burkey coming with the flow. Geoff Nigl on keys and  guitar, Richard Galiguis rocking bass and guitar. John Avery with the saxophone and Malachi Johnson on drums.

To say the fusion band is well known in the San Diego music scene is an understatement, seeing as they have been awarded best San Diego hip hop band in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2018. Vokab Kompany has preformed at some major music festivals such as Lightning in A Bottle and Electric Forest. As well as playing direct support for the likes of Umphrey’s McGee, Cage the Elephant, Pepper and Wiz Khalifa.

With a resume this extensive it’s easy to say these cats deserve everything they’ve worked so hard for. “Small Viktories” is being released through Gravitas Records and is their first album release since 2016 with “The Good Kompany Album.”

        Vokab Kompany and JPOD begin the album with a feel good, electro-synth, hip hop bop called “Like That” (watch the music video here). Setting the tone and letting you know you’re in for a funky ride. On the second track we have the one and only queen of funk that is, Megan Hamilton. Gracing the album with a track called, “Fabtastik” it’s sure to be a funk house anthem. Catchy flows and horny saxophone solos guaranteed to have you dancing and singing along feeling “Fabtastik.”

         The project begins to downshift and gets sentimental, hitting you with some warm summertime feels. With an uplifting AHEE collaboration, “Get it Right” inspires you with positive lyrics and trap drums to jam to going right into “Classic.” Their take on a love song, with no features on the track, shows you the musical range these guys are capable of.

On “30 Stories Up,” they bring Cloudchord and Mitchy Slick for a catchy, deep house, chill-bop with a melodic hook, you can’t help but sing along with. This tune truly embodies the feeling of a summer evening at a beach house, dancing in the glow of the golden hour, vibing with the homies.

With “Coffee & Chill,” Vokab Kompany brings the mindful lyricist, Lily Fangz to harmonize and spit some bars, breathing life into this lo-fi tune. MIDIcinal accompanies the track with a flow all of his own.

Now the last track on the album is not to be missed. Mitchy Slick and Alfred Howard get political with ‘Politricks’, a track which touches on current social issues in the United States of America. A powerful message to think about amidst the chaos today. We love it when artists use their platform to spread awareness.
