GGD Artist Feature: Chachuba
In the space where electronically produced music comes to life, there is Chachuba. The band is influenced by electronic music while simultaneously placing value in unique experiences and live sound. Having played at Hook and Ladder in Minneapolis with Frogleg in 2017, Chachuba hasn’t played in the Land of 10,000 Lakes since.
With great joy, the band is making a return as part of the second, and final, phase of the Galactic Get-Down Music Festival line-up. The out-of-this-world festival is hosted by Dead Larry and held at Outback Ranch in Houston, Minnesota over the weekend of July 30-August 1.
The now three-piece band consists of Sean DiCosola on keys and production, Jimmy Klimek on guitar and Gary Goodheart on drums. To get everyone familiar with the Chicago-based group, we hit Sean with the hard questions about the band’s musical influences, a recent transition and of course, space.
PH: Do you think aliens would listen to Chachuba in space?
C: Aliens are confirmed to listen to Chachuba.
PH: If so, what would be their favorite song or album?
C: They like all our future songs. Aliens are the ones transmitting the music into our brains – for the world.
PH: What do you think about us now having not one, but TWO moons?
C: What if we had 8 moons?
PH: Lunar eclipses or solar eclipses? Why?
C: Solar eclipses because of its rarity.
PH: What’s your favorite planet?
C: Our favorite planet is the planet Earth. Merely because of all the wonderful humans providing all this wonderful art and love.
PH: GGD is a space-themed festival, do y’all plan on dressing the part?
C: We will for sure be dressing the part, I always have my moon boots on.
PH: What artist are YOU looking forward to seeing on the GGD lineup?
C: We are really looking forward to all the artists and especially discovering new ones.
PH: How long has the band been a three-piece as opposed to a four-piece band?
C: Since September 2019.
PH: What is/was that transition like?
C: It was a bit scary, but ended up working out much easier than expected. We couldn’t be more pleased with the new product. Now, we are more of a live DJ project which is where the band was heading the whole time. This change just accelerated that.
PH: Do y’all plan on ever including a fourth member again?
C: We were thinking about it but with the whole EDM change, we don’t feel like there is a need for another member. But, that doesn’t mean you may not see a bass on stage someday.
PH: The team behind PH is actually all pretty big fans of Charles the First. Has he responded to or heard your cover of “The Descent”?
C: We are not sure if he has heard it but if he has we hope he enjoyed it.
PH: I see Eoto is one of your big influences, I definitely get that vibe. If ever the opportunity – what advice would you ask the duo?
C: I have had the pleasure of talking with Jason and Travis at this past Werkout Festival. They are amazing dudes and very inspirational. I followed them before I was ever even in a band. I also learned a lot from their video, “How does Eoto do it?”
PH: Where does the name “Chachuba” come from?
C: The million-dollar question. So, back at Summer Camp 2010, I was telling a friend about the band “Dopapod” because he hadn’t heard of them. Let’s just say he was having a little too much fun that weekend and couldn’t remember their name. He kept on saying “when are we going to go see Chachuba?” instead of Dopapod. After the 20th time of him saying “Chachuba” it kind of just dawned on us and we were like “Chachuba” let’s make that a reality.
PH: Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin?
C: I would say we are all Pink Floyd guys.
Lucky for the band, and yourself, both a side project of Neal “Fro” Evans of Dopapod and Scott Flynn of Pretty Lights will be performing together under the name Elephant Wrecking Bot as well as Pink Floyd cover band, Momentary lapse of Floyd. Other names included in the second phase of the line up were Mae Simpson Music, Feed the Dog, Space Monster, Max Grahm & The Fam, Earth to Clark, Swashbuckler, The Floating Perspectives, Renneygade and Desperate Electric.
Tickets for Galactic Get-Down Music Festival are available on the website. For those looking to get the fun started early, join the festival’s Facebook group, Atom’s Family, for conversations orbiting around the festival and other funky space stuff.
Later, space cadets!
