Hotel Minnesnowta Event Preview: Featuring Heatbox
The month is September (or maybe October if you’re lucky), and you’ve just completed your final festival of the year. You think to yourself, “Sure, shows are cool and all, but do I really have to wait until May before I can camp with all of my festival friends again and rage to live music for days on end?”
Well, if you live in the snowy Midwest, the technical answer to this question will probably always be “yes.” However, if you loosely interpret “camping festival” to mean “everyone staying at the same hotel where there’s activities and lots of dope music,” then the answer to the question shifts in your favor. If a “camping festival” in the middle of winter is what you desire, then Hotel Minnesnowta is the place you seek.
MJG Productions will be hosting its sixth annual Hotel Minnesnowta on January 17 and 18 in Plymouth, MN, and despite the Minnesota winter, it’s going to get hot in there. Music will include Megan Hamilton, Smokin’ Joe, Space Monkey Mafia, two sets of Cas Haley, and two sets of Useful Jenkins to name just a few.
Artguy Chuck will be presenting his psychedelic paintings, and Get Down Enterprises will be hosting their Galactic Lounge for the second year in a row — A chill space where attendees will be able to witness exclusive performances and even watch movies. Festival goers will also have access to a pool and a hot tub, and Heatbox will be hosting his third annual Mario Kart 8 tournament.
Speaking of Heatbox, here’s what he had to say about Hotel Minnesnowta and some of his plans for the near future as well.
Q: What sets Hotel Minnesnowta apart from other festivals?
A: It’s in a hotel! Hotel parties are amazing fun. Where else can you see great music and also be in a Mario Kart tournament?
Q: Tell us about the kickstarter you’re launching in February.
A: I haven’t made a new album in seven years. Today (January 6) I start work on my fourth album! I’ll be starting the kickstarter in order to pre-sell albums to be able to record this thing. I’m really excited because this is my first comedy album and my first album with guest artists.
Q: So this is your third annual Mario Kart tournament at Hotel Minnesnowta. Is this a tradition you wish to continue every year? Might some other video game ever take its place?
A: I would love to host the Mario Kart tournament for infinity years. I’m hard-pressed to find a game that is as accessible yet refinable as Mario Kart. Plus the rounds are quite short, so the tournament doesn’t have to take eight hours.
Q: Got any exciting plans in store for 2020?
A: In 2020 I’m going to raise funds for and release my new album. I also hope to kick off Soul-Players Season 3 bigger and better than ever before. In Season 3, the contestants will have touch pads instead of Xbox controllers. This will really help the game show be more accessible to more people!
Q: What are you most hyped for at this year’s Hotel Minnesnowta?
A: Watching Shane crush people’s hopes and dreams in Mario Kart. I hope you get blue shelled. (I did not put him up to this. This was really his answer.)
Tickets to Hotel Minnesnowta can be purchased here. Don’t miss it, or you’ll be waiting four long months to see all of your festival friends again.
